Senior Night Success sees Firebirds to 69-46 Victory over Queens

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia Women's Basketball team was celebrating success on the court as they defeated Queens College 69-46 in a crucial East coast Conference game that saw the Firebirds leap to a playoff position at the UDC Sports Complex.

The Firebirds (8-19, 4-11 ECC), started the night in positive spirits as senior night took place. The evening proved to be jubilant with a lot to be excited about. The Firebirds knew victory over Queens would see them jump into a Playoff spot going into the final game of the season this weekend.

Freshman Halia Ellis started the game off the right way with a three point effort off an assist from senior Sarah Hare. The Firebirds maintained a relentless start to the first period that the visitors struggled to contain with senior Tyra Coombs striking seven points in the first quarter of the game and taking 13 points and nine rebounds on the night. The first period saw the Firebirds control the game 19-9 going into the second.

The second period saw a short fight back by the Knights, however, Alexus King was on hand to dampen any comeback as she hit a three point shot to make 20 points in the game and three assists. The second quarter ended 35-22.

The third quarter proved to be much the same with the Firebirds keeping the game under control and making sure that mistakes were limited for any comeback made by Queens.

Going into the final period with the score at 49-34, Coombs struck another three point shot at the start of the quarter, and set the pace for the rest of the game. A strong final period by Maya Thomas saw her hit 10 points and 15 points on the night to give UDC the convincing victory and a chance at an ECC Playoff Berth.

The Firebirds will be heading to St. Thomas Aquinas, Saturday February 29th for a 1PM start.

UDC Athletics would also like to thank our seniors; Tyra Coombs and Sarah Hare.
