Wildcats Top Chargers, Fall To Panthers In Final Day of Adelphi Volleyball Tournament

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – After splitting Saturday's matches with a 3-0 win over New Haven and an 0-3 loss to host Adelphi, the Daemen University women's volleyball team finished the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament 2-2. Daemen freshman outside hitter Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) finished with a team-high 32 kills on the day. The Wildcats exit the tournament with a 7-4 record on the season.
 

DAEMEN VS. NEW HAVEN
The Wildcats won their second straight match of the tournament with a 3-0 (25-13, 32-30, 25-19) sweep over New Haven on Saturday morning to move to 7-3 on the season. Daemen out-hit the Chargers 50 to 32 and hit at a .258 clip in the match. Koerber posted career-highs in 21 kills (7 kills/set) and hitting percentage (.340) in the win.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Koerber led the Wildcats offensively for the fifth match this season with her 21-kill performance against New Haven. The heavy hitting freshman added eight digs, two assists and an ace in her 22-point outing.
  • Fifth year outside hitter Maggie Burns (Louisville, Ky.) posted her second double-double of the season, finishing with 11 kills (3.66 kills/set) with a .290 hitting percentage and totaled 10 digs (3.33 digs/set) in the match.
  • Senior right side Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) finished with double-digit kills for the for the sixth match this season with her 10-kill outing. Giraud added two block assists and two digs.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) totaled 24 digs (8.0 digs/set), two aces and five assists. Brundage has tallied 20+ digs in four matches this season.
  • Sophomore defensive specialist Mariangelys Vazquez (Bayamon, Pr.) finished with 13 digs (4.33 digs/set) and an ace.
  • Senior setter Olivia Alessi (East Aurora, N.Y.) posted 39 assists (13 assists/set) and a team-high four aces.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Daemen posted 17 kills and just two errors for a .405 hitting percentage in the first, handling the Chargers in the set 25-13.
  • After being just two points from taking the second set easily, the Wildcats and Chargers went on a back-and-forth tear, racking up the points until Daemen finally took the set 32-30. The Wildcats finished with 19 second-set kills, and New Haven posted 15 kills in the set for a grand total of 34 kills through the second.
  • Daemen held New Haven to just eight third-set kills while totaling 14 to win the third 25-19 and take the match.
  • The Wildcats finished with double-digit aces for the fifth match this season, totaling 11 on the day. Alessi posted four aces, Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) finished with three and Brundage finished with two.
  • The match against New Haven was just the fourth time this season that Daemen posted 50+ kills. 

DAEMEN VS. ADELPHI
The Wildcats dropped the final match of the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament 3-0 (19-25, 19-25, 24-26) to the host Panthers. Koerber and Burns combined for 22 of Daemen's 38 total kills, with each outside hitter finishing with 11 kills in the match.

IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Koerber earned her sixth double-double of the year, posting 11 kills (3.66 kills/set) and 10 digs (3.33 digs/set) along with one ace and one solo block for a team-high 13 points.
  • Burns totaled 11 kills (3.66 kills/set), eight digs and one assisted block on the day.
  • Senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) totaled 32 assists (10.67 assists/set), six digs and one ace.
  • Giraud posted eight kills and no errors for a .267 hitting percentage against the Panthers.
  • Senior middle blocker Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) posted six kills for a .250 hitting percentage and added four digs and one assisted block to her stat line.
  • Brundage finished with 21 total digs (7 digs/set) and one assist.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Panthers held Daemen to just a .096 hitting percentage in the first after the Wildcats totaled 11 kills and six errors on 52 attacks. Adelphi took the first set, 25-19.
  • After trading points to open up the second, Adelphi went on the offensive, going on a 7-2 run that Daemen could never overcome. The Panthers won the second 25-19.
  • The pivotal third set was back-and-forth from the start, with each team taking turns going on runs. Adelphi wrapped up the set with a match-winning 26-24 victory, but the Wildcats out-hit the Panthers 15-14 in the final set.

UP NEXT
The Wildcats will play three matches next weekend, starting with Friday night's non-conference match at Southern Connecticut State at 6 PM in New Haven, CT. The Wildcats open up East Coast Conference play on Saturday with a noon match at Queens, then will travel to face Molloy in a noon match on Sunday.
