Men’s Soccer Slips to Adelphi

Rockville Centre, N.Y. – The Molloy men's soccer team fell to local rival Adelphi University, 1-0, Tuesday evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions move to 1-5-1 on the campaign, while the Panthers improve to 3-3-1.

How it Happened
  • Defense was the name of the game in the opening 22 minutes, as neither team allowed a shot, corner, or scoring opportunity.
  • The first shot of the evening came in the 24th minute when Adelphi defender Benji Jones blasted a shot from the left side, but it was saved by graduate student Dennis Mejia.
  • Jones would find himself with another opportunity five minutes later, but again, Mejia denied the opportunity to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Panthers threated twice in the final five minutes of the half with a shot from Luca Boast and a header from Richard DeBrosse. Mejia converted both saves, sending the contest into halftime without a score.
  • Similarly, to the first stanza, the first 20 minutes of the second half did not see a scoring chance as both teams' backline set the tempo.
  • Panther's midfielder Luca Boast was able to generate a chance but set it high in the 67th minute.
  • Three minutes later, Adelphi broke the scoreboard when Jesper Mikkelsen was able to coral a loose ball in the box and slip it passed the goalkeeper. Adelphi led, 1-0, with 20 minutes to play.
  • The road team continued to try and add an insurance goal in the 83rd and 84th minute, but Mejia stood strong in goal and made two saves to keep the game at 1-0.
  • Molloy made a push to knot the contest in the 86th minute generating two excellent scoring chances.
  • Junior Nick Leon was able to get behind the goalkeeper for his chance, but his opportunity was blocked. Freshman Matthew Broadhead followed up with a rebound, but the shot was pushed just wide right of target ending the contest with Adelphi coming out victorious, 1-0.
Top Performances
  • Leon and Broadhead had one shot each.
