Women's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw with Mercy

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Soccer team fought off heavy rain and slick field conditions to earn a 1-1 draw with Mercy University on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.

STAC moves to 2-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the ECC, while Mercy goes to 3-3-3 and 2-1-2.

A Mavericks own goal accounted for the Spartans tally, while the visitors received a goal from Maleah Tarin. In goal, STAC's Catalena Robson went the distance and stopped three of four shots faced. On the other end of the field, Mercy's Kamy Anaya turned away eight of nine shots.

How it Happened

  • 19th Minute - A shot sent into the box by Rachael Brownell would ricochet off of a Mercy defender back to their keeper Kamy Anaya, who would have the ball glance off of her arm and cross the goal line. After consultation between the referee and the far side assistant referee, the own goal was confirmed to give STAC the 1-0 lead.
  • 62nd Minute - On a throw-in by the Mavericks, the Spartans initially cleared the ball from in front of their own goal, but it landed at the feet of Kayla Camacho. Camacho powered her way to the net and sent a pass off of a defender in maroon and gold to teammate Maleah Tarin, who blasted a shot to the top left corner of the net, beating Catalena Robson to tie the game at 1-1.
