Spartans Swept in Friday Twin Bill at New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team made its way back up I-95 on Friday to take on the University of New Haven in a non-conference twin bill at Frank Vieira Field. The doubleheader marked games two and three of a five-game series between the Spartans and Chargers. New Haven took both ends of the twinbill, 4-1 and 6-0.

STAC slips back under .500 at 18-19, while UNH improves to 23-10 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

  • Josh Lester opened the scoring for New Haven in the first inning with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Andrew Cain to make it 1-0.
  • An RBI groundout by Tyler Wells in the third doubled the Chargers lead at 2-0, as Cain made his way to the plate for a second time in the contest.
  • Josh Lester helped New Haven make it a 3-0 game, when he was caught in a rundown between first and second base, allowing Robert Tayor to make his way home.
  • A fifth inning single to left field by Billy Minett broke the shutout for the Spartans, as Gregory DiGiaro scored to make it 3-1.
  • New Haven added an insurance run in the bottom of the stanza on a Robert Taylor sacrifice bunt, bringing in teammate Noah Budzik to extend the Chargers lead to 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

  • A first inning RBI sac-fly to centerfield, plated Andrew Cain for a third time on the day to open the scoring in the second game, making it 1-0 UNH.
  • Andrew Cain's 2 RBI fielder's choice brought both Kenneth Franquiz and Andrew Blanco around to score, extending the Chargers lead to 3-0 in the fifth.
  • In the sixth inning, Shaun Callahan singled to left field, scoring teammates Zack Pincince and Josh Lester to make it a 5-0 game.
  • Noah Budzik closed the scoring for New Haven on a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Shaun Callahan to score to give the hosts a commanding 6-0 lead.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Nick O'Connor went 2-for-6 on the afternoon with a double.
  • STAC also received hits from Sean Lynch (1), Billy Minett (1), C.J. Cumbo (1), Joseph Scamardella (1) and Andrew Jemison (1) in the doubleheader.
  • Aaron Dona got the ball for Spartans in game one on Friday and allowed five hits and four runs over five innings, while walking three and striking out seven. Dona was charged with the loss, his third in seven decisions.
  • Bryan Krolikowski worked out bullpen for the Spartans in the sixth, and surrendered only one hit, while fanning one.
  • John Archer tossed five and a third innings as the Spartans game two starter, giving up six runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out two. Archer took the loss and moved to 3-4 on the season.
  • Jack Wilde picked up the final two outs of the sixth inning for STAC, sending the Charger hitters down via a sacrifice flyout and a lineout.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans posted 1 run on 7 hits, with 1 error, while New Haven earned 10 runs on 14 hits, with one error in two games.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 10 Chargers batters, while issuing 5 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 9 runners on base. New Haven also left 9 in both contests.

Due to the upcoming weather forecast and field availability at Clover Stadium, Saturday's home doubleheader with New Haven has been moved to Monday, April 24. First pitch of game one is set for 3:30 p.m. in Pomona, N.Y.
