Women's Volleyball Scores 3-1 Decision Over D'Youville

Sparkill, N.Y. - As the only Spartan team facing perfect weather conditions on Saturday, due to their being indoors, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Volleyball team earned its first conference victory, with a 3-1 decision over D'Youville University at Aquinas Hall Gym.

STAC improves to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in ECC play, while D'Youville improves to 5-9 and 2-2.

How it Happened

  • First Set: The Spartans started off the afternoon with the lead, but a service ace from D'Youville tied the game up at 4. From there, the Spartans regained the lead jumping up again, but a Saints kill tied the match up at 11. St. Thomas Aquinas fought back and the score was eventually brought even again at 25-25. The maroon and gold would go ahead with the final two kills from Alana Rider and Jaizahir Marrero-George to take the first set 27-25.
  • Second Set: In set two, D'Youville took the early 4-0 lead. STAC worked to come back, but the Saints held strong and controlled the lead for the majority of the game. The Spartans brought the set to a tie at 23 on a Aurivette Santos Bonilla service ace, but a a pair of kills from D'Youville gave the Saints the 25-23 win in set two.
  • Third Set: Again, in the third set D'Youville got on top early, but the STAC quickly came back tying the game at four on an Elizabeth Salmon kill. The visiting Saints fought to get back on top and came within one on a service ace at 16-17. However, the St. Thomas Aquinas had hit their stride and would go on to win the third set 25-18.
  • Fourth Set: The Spartans continued to work hard going into set four. After falling behind early, D'Youville attempted a comeback, scoring five straight points to tie the game at eight. STAC quickly regained the lead, but the Saints stayed close. A D'Youville kill brought the match within two points at 21-23, but the maroon and gold would go on to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.
