Wildcats Open Conference Play With Win Over Regionally-Ranked Queens

AMHERST, N.Y. – A penalty kick converted by senior Madita Zeitz (Malsch, Germany) late in the first half proved to be the game-winner, as the Daemen University women's soccer team opened East Coast Conference play with a 1-0 victory over regionally-ranked Queens College today at Karrer Field. Daemen improved to 1-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the ECC. Queens, which is ranked No. 10 in this week's United Soccer Coaches East Region poll, suffered its second-straight loss and dropped to 1-3-1 (0-1-0 ECC).

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Daemen netted the only goal of the game with just over 11 minutes left in the first half. Sophomore Kylie Miranto (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) was fouled inside the Queens box and the referee immediately signaled for a penalty kick. Zeitz sent a shot into the lower left corner past the diving QC netminder for her first goal of the season.
  • Both teams registered five shots in the first half, but Daemen controlled the play for most of the second half and posted an 8-2 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes.
  • The Daemen defense allowed just one shot on goal in the second half to secure the win.
  • Daemen posted an 13-7 edge in total shots and the hosts also owned a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Sophomore Becca Schultz (Grand Island, N.Y.) went the distance in goal for the Wildcats and made three saves en route to her second career shutout. Graduate transfer Erin Kelly did not record a save for the Knights.
GAME NOTES
  • Today's contest marked the 10th all-time meeting between the two schools. Daemen has prevailed in four of the last five meetings, but Queens owns a 5-4-1 advantage in the all-time series. Each of the last four meetings have been decided by one goal. The Knights posted a 1-0 victory in New York City last year.
  • Zeitz led the Wildcats with four shots, while senior Brooke Amato (Grand Island, N.Y.) totaled three.
