DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2023) – Powered by the game-tying goal in the 67th minute from sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College), off an assist from sophomore Mateo Bacigalupo (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Colegio Cardenal Newman), the Mercy University men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (1-1-1) earn their first draw of the season and earn a tie against the Panthers (0-2-1) for the second straight year.
Hanken Tjostheim scored his team-leading third goal of the season and Bacigalupo recorded his first assist of the season. Junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves to earn the draw in goal.
Adelphi was led by Luca Boast who scored and by Daniel De La Heras who made a game-high three saves.
The teams traded shots on goal in the early minutes of the game, but both goalkeepers made a save to keep the game scoreless. Boast opened the scoring in the 37th minute, finding the lower right corner of the net, to give Adelphi a 1 0 lead. The Panthers held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Elvestad made a save in the 59th minute to keep the score 1-0. Hanken Tjostheim found the back of the net for the third time in two games, finding the lower right corner of the net after a Bacigalupo assist to tie the game at 1-1 in the 67th minute.
Hanken Tjostheim tried to give the Mavericks the lead, but De La Heras made two saves on Hanken Tjostheim shot attempts to keep the game knotted at 1-1.
Neither team could find the back of the net and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mercy held a 9-7 edge in shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 9th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 4 p.m.
