Adams Posts up first Double-Double of the Season but Firebirds are Edged out by the Wildcats

Washington, D.C- The University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team was edged out by the Daemen Wildcats 65-61 in an intense conference showdown on Sunday afternoon at the UDC Gymnasium. The Wildcats improved to 15-5 on the season 4-2 in conference play while the Firebirds fell to 8-10 on the season and 3-3 in league play. 

Senior Forward Consolo Adams posted his first double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also had a team high four blocks. Aaren Smith led the Firebirds offensively with 14 points going 6-12 from the field and 2-5 from the three-point line. He was followed by Juanye Colon who posted 13 points.

The game started with a 7-0 run by the Firebirds but the Wildcats were able to take the lead which was then tied out, close to the 12-minute mark. Daemen went on to lead UDC for majority of the rest of the first half but dunk by Smith but the Firebirds in the lead 29-28 going into the half. 

After a series of back and forth and a couple of ties the Firebirds took the lead and opened up the gap by 11 points. Daemen fought their way back to tie the game 56-56 with four minutes remaining. A layup made by Smith and a free throw made by Jahmir Marable Williams brought UDC back in the lead but Daemen again fought their way back to even out the score 61-61 with only 30 seconds left to go in regulation. Joey Wallace's made layup at 00:26 gave Damen the lead and a foul on Smith sent Jeff Redband to the line where he made both free throws to secure the win for the Wildcats. 

The Firebirds (8-10, 3-3 ECC) will head to N.Y. on Wednesday January 22 to face off against Queens College at 7:00pm.
