STAC Storms Past Alliance 91-52 in 2022 Season Opener

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team (1-0) kicked off their 2022-2023 season and home opener with a 91-52 triumph against Alliance University (0-1). 

Jamal Barnes led the way for the Spartans, posting 19 points, while DeVante Jamison (14 points), James Patterson (10 points) and Richard Smith (10 points) also scored in double-figures.

Matt Capell made his season debut as Head Coach of the Spartans, picking up his first career victory, following nine years as both an Assistant Coach, then Associate Head Coach for the program.

STAC shot 45.3 percent from the field (34-75) and 35.5 percent from behind the arc (11-31) in the season opener, while Alliance shot 25.4 percent (15-59) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the Spartans with five assists on the day.
  • Jamal Barnes made 6 of his 15 field goal attempts, with all six coming from three-point range. Meanwhile, Jamison went 5-of-10 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded Alliance 55-40 through 40 minutes of action, with Kyle Pulliam posting a team-leading eight boards.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals in the contest, with Alliance turning the ball over on 20 different occasions.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A raucous crowd packed Aquinas Hall for the season opener, with high expectations for another long postseason run for the Spartans and squad in maroon and gold did not disappoint.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas was strong from the opening tip, building an early 10-point advantage and expanding it by as much as 18 points midway through the stanza.
  • The host Spartans took a 50-31 lead into the halftime locker room.
  • Jamal Barnes paced the offense for the Spartans in the first half, with 12 points, while Isayas Arias posted nine points for Alliance.
  • The red-hot STAC offense continued its scoring prowess in the second half, with STAC building an impressive 39-point advantage at one point and just slamming the door shut on any rally attempt by the former Nyack College Warriors.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over Alliance: Points off of Turnovers (31-12), Second Chance Points (22-11), Points in the Paint (40-26) and Bench Points (39-14).
