UDC Falls to Southern Connecticut State 55-67

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) 55-67, Thursday afternoon at the James Moore Field House. The Firebirds fell to 6-7 on the season and the Owls improved to 7-3. Destiny Ryles led all scorers with 20 points and Latavia Jackson and Shanell Haskins posted 11 and 10 points each. Aiyana Ellis grabbed a team high seven rebounds. The Firebirds trailed the Owls the entire first half but was kept alive by Ryles who scored 15 of their 27 points. A scoring drought in the opening four minutes of the third saw UDC close the deficit, and force the first and only tie of the game. But the home team managed to pull away to the 67-55 victory. SCSU shot at 50% from the field while holding the Firebirds to 31.7%. They out rebounded UDC 42-27, and had more bench points 20–8. The Firebirds forced more turnovers (18-14) and was able to convert more points off turnovers (19-9) but also struggled from behind the arc going 5-25. Next Up, UDC (6-7, 2-1 ECC) kicks off the New Year, with their final non-conference match up of the regular season with an away game against Salem University. The game is slated for next Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
