Spartans Close Regular Season Play with 4-0 Senior Day Blanking of Roberts Wesleyan

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team closed out its 2023 regular season schedule with a 4-0 shutout victory over Roberts Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.

STAC heads to postseason play with a 10-2-4 overall record and a perfect 7-0-1 ECC mark, while Roberts Wesleyan also prepares for an upcoming playoff run by going 5-6-4 and 3-3-2.

Prior to the contest, the Spartans honored its graduating class; Andres Gonzalez-Rios, Joshua Heber and Dimitry Tchantcheu with on-field ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, friends, teammates, coaches and college administrators.

Once the match got underway, STAC's Kevon Evans tallied a pair of goals in the regular season finale, with Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba and Alejandro Zuniga also netting goals. In goal, Calle Olle Petter Gunnarsson (W, 10-0-2) turned away both shots he faced in over 77 plus minutes of action to earn his 10th victory in 12 decisions for the Spartans, along with his sixth clean sheet of the season. Gino Gandzior saw time on the pitch for the final 12 minutes of the second half and was not tested. On the other end of the field, Caleb DaSilva (L, 5-6-4) stopped seven of ten shots, before being replaced by Juan Espinosa who allowed a goal on his only shot faced.

How it Happened

  • 15th Minute: A free kick by Alejandro Zuniga found the head of teammate Dimitry Tchantcheu inside the box, who flicked it to the foot of Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba for the redirection goal at the right post, beating Redhawks keeper Caleb DaSilva to make it 1-0 Spartans.
  • 60th Minute: Andres Gonzalez-Rios stripped the ball from a Roberts Wesleyan player and sent a through ball directly to Kevon Evans who made his way toward the net on a partial break away. Evans then out dribbled DaSilva, and slid a soft pass off of his back foot under the Redhawks keeper and to the back of the onion bag to double the STAC advantage at 2-0.
  • 64th Minute: An offensive rush inside the Redhawks end of the field allowed Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba to make his way up the far sideline, where he turned into midfield. Passing up a shot opportunity, Fredrick-Ilekhuoba sent a feed to the Alejandro Zuniga, who blasted a shot past an almost surprised Caleb DaSilva to give the maroon and gold a commanding 3-0 lead.
  • 70th Minute: The final goal of the match came via a Redhawks turnover, as Alejandro Zuniga and Joshua Heber played a little give and go as they made their way upfield. Zuniga received a pass back from Heber and sailed a fly ball to Kevon Evans, who sent a floater over the head of keeper Juan Espinosa to make it a 4-0 match.
