Tarin Scores Game-Winning Goal in 22nd Minute as Women's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win at Queens

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Sept. 23, 2023) – Powered by the game-winning goal from sophomore Maleah Tarin (Eastvale, Calif./Chino Hills) in the 22nd minute, off an assist from senior Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch), the Mercy University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over ECC foe Queens College on Saturday night at Knights Field.

The Mavericks (2-2-2, 1-0-1 ECC) pick up their first ECC win of the season and the first ECC win for head coach Jack Nicholson. The Knights (2-4-1, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play and have dropped eight straight meetings to Mercy.

Tarin recorded her team-leading second goal of the season and first collegiate game-winning goal. Avalos dished out her first assist of the season and sophomore Kamy Anaya (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) made two saves to earn the shutout win.

Queens was led by Jenna Rosenberger who had a team-high two shots. Erin Kelly made four saves to take the loss.

Anaya made the game's first save in the 10th minute and Kelly stopped an Elizabeth Bowles (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers Montessori Academy) shot in the 18th minute to keep the game scoreless. Mercy scored in the 22nd minute as Tarin found the back of the net after an Avalos corner kick to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.

Mercy headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead, outshooting the Knights 5-1 in the half.

Anaya made a diving save on a Rosenberger shot in the 76th minute to keep Queens off the scoreboard. Mercy's backline held the Knights without a shot on goal in the final 14 minutes of action to earn the 1-0 shutout win.

Mercy held a 9-3 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Jack Nicholson and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 27th when they host Staten Island at 2:30 p.m.
