UDC Men's Soccer Season Comes to a Close in ECC Championship Final

FLUSHING, N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's men's soccer team saw their season come to a close in the ECC Championship Final after falling to Queens College 0-1, Saturday afternoon at the Knight's Field.

The Firebirds end the season with a 6-7-7 overall record and a 3-1-4 record in ECC play. They qualified for their third post season in program history, hosted their first post season game and, made it to their second Championship final.

Both teams battled 78 minutes without a goal before the Knights Tommy Gunn, broke the dry spell, scoring what ended up being the game-winner. The Firebirds fought to find the equalizer but would come up short.

The Firebirds were voted to place 6th in the conference in this year's preseason poll. Five Firebirds made all-conference teams (Axel Gamez, Keino Thompson, Santiago Gordillo Martinez, Sergio Becerra and Isaiah Daniel ) Daniel was also named the program's first ever ECC Rookie of the Year.

"Disappointing end to the year - after making a final, we really wanted to finish the Job!" said Head Coach Matthew Thompson. "I Feel for the seniors that have given everything for the program - they did deserve to go away with a ring! Just fell short."

"We started the season slow - as we thought we would with so many new players coming into the squad and trying a new formation. Non conference games were used to give guy's opportunities and playing time and a chance to get some experience. We then tried to focus on the ECC games. Only lost once in those games until the final.

"Our highlights were beating RWU after coming from 2 goals down, to win 3-2 - in the first round of the ECC tournament and, beating the #1 seed away in the semi-final, was an awesome day as well."

"It was a great ride - fun to keep playing until the last week of the season, just disappointing not to win the ECC Championship for the first time. Makes us hungry for next season to go one step." further!!
