Late Assumption Goals Send Spartans to First Defeat, 2-1

Worcester, Mass. - A pair of late second half goals by Assumption University, sent the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team to its first defeat of the 2023 season, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Marois Field.

STAC slips to 3-1-2 on the season, while Assumption improves to 2-4-0.

Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba tallied the lone goal in the match for the Spartans, his third of the season. Daniel Paulsson and William Rakkenes picked up the game-tying and game-winning goals respectively for the Greyhounds.

In the net, Assumption's Sebastian Podgomy (W, 1-0) stopped 9 of 10 shots faced to outduel STAC's both Calle Olle Petter Gunnarsson and Tabor McDaniels (L, 0-1) who combined to make four saves.

  • 26th Minute - A boot, combined with a header moved the ball through midfield and onto the foot of Kevon Evans, who danced around a defender and slid a pass over to Uhunoma Fredrick-Ilekhuoba who put a shot past Greyhounds keeper Sebastian Podgomy to the back left corner of the net to make it 1-0 Spartans.
  • 73rd Minute - A long shot from midfield was picked up by Daniel Paulsson who beat two defenders and put a well-placed shot to the right post, beating Spartans keeper Tabor McDaniels to tie the game at 1-1.
  • 83rd Minute - On a STAC turnover, Assumption raced up the field with Daniel Paulsson leading the charge. Paulsson would find teammate William Rakkenes who would beat his defender and send a soft touch pass past Tabor McDaniels to give the hosts the 2-1 advantage.
