Ryles' Game-High 21 points Not Enough as Firebirds Overtaken by Marauders

MILLERSVILLE, PA- The University of the District of Columbia's women's basketball team fell to Millersville University, 52-68, Wednesday evening at the Pucillo Gymnasium. The Firebirds fell to 5-6 on the season while the Marauders improved to 6-2.

Destiny Ryles led all scorers with 21 points, going 8-15 from the field, 2-4 from behing the arc and 3-4 from the free throw line, all while making a game-high three steals. Latavia jackson added 13 points and seven rebounds, Tori Williams grabbed a team high 10 rebounds, and six points, and Halia Ellis came off the bench to add six. 

UDC took the early lead after a quick bucket off the tip-off by Ryles followed by a three pointer. It was a back and forth affair as both teams traded leads and a couple of ties before the Marauders came away with the three point lead going into the second quarter.

The second quarter saw the visiting Firebirds struggle from the field shooting at 28.6% compared to the home team's 38.9% resulting in a six point deficit at the half.  

The offensive struggles continued into the fourth quarter as the Marauders managed to open up a 20 point lead with 3:39 remaining. Last minute efforts by Ellis, Laaila Dodo and Jackson managed to cut the lead by four to bring the final score to 68-52 in favor of the home team.

Next Up UDC (5-6, 2-1 ECC) will head back to PA on Saturday for a HBCU showdown against Cheyney. Tip-off is set for 1:00 PM.
