Firebirds Erupt in Vital ECC Win Against Queens

WASHINGTON, DC – The University of the District of Columbia Men's Basketball team produced a vital 72-55 win on Wednesday evening to stake their claim in the East Coast Conference Playoffs against Queens College.

The Firebirds (11-16, 6-9 ECC) who honored six seniors on the night got off to a nervy start that saw both teams take control. But the UDC team who worked well as a team saw five of the six seniors get on the scoreboard in the first half to make it 36-27.

Zachary Olukanni who took 18 points and four rebounds performed to an outstanding level once again to help the Firebirds take down the Knights. Aaren Smith saw himself grab a double-double by getting 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Defensively the Firebirds protected very well as Kenneth Stancell grabbed seven rebounds and earned four points on his final regular season home game for the Firebirds.

UDC remained in total control in the second half as they continued to hold Queens off. The score finished at 72-55 to show a resounding victory for the Firebirds.

They will be looking to cement their ECC Playoff spot when they visit St. Thomas Aquinas, Saturday February 29th, at 3PM.

UDC Athletics would also like to thank our seniors: Kerry Kirkwood, Kenneth Stancell, Consolo Adams, Zachary Olukanni, Aaren Smith, and Isaiah Robinson for their efforts as a Firebird and hope they can continue to lead the team into the ECC Championships.
