Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

DOLPHINS FALL JUST SHORT IN CLOSING MINUTES OF LOSS TO ASSUMPTION, 4-3

Worcester, MA - The College of Staten Island Men's Soccer Team was dealt their first loss of the 2023 season earlier today as they fell to Assumption University, 4-3.  Both teams end the day with a 1-1 record on the season and the Greyhounds take a 2-0 lead in the all-time series.  The Dolphins battled back from a 2-1 deficit and tied the score two separate times in the second half on goals by Miguel Espinosa.  However, Peter Hasund put Assumption ahead for good with under four minutes to play in the game.

The Dolphins fell behind in the game's opening minutes, but quickly got even on a Daniel Angulo penalty kick.  Less than 10 minutes later, Johannes Sundgot would score for the second time to give the Greyhounds the lead back, 2-1.  This would be the last time either team would score for nearly 40 minutes as the game went into the half with Assumption leading 2-1.

Neither team would score for the first 15 minutes of the second half either, but the offensive drought would end with an Espinosa goal in the 62nd minute.  Moments later, Dolphins goalkeeper Amari Thompson was ejected from the game following a red card, and Assumption would seize the lead right back just three minutes later.  That lead was short-lived as Espinosa would score a second time, his third goal of the season, to even up the score at 3-3.  This score would stand until the 87th minute when Hasund put the Greyhounds ahead for good with the game-winning goal.

Assumption more than doubled the CSI shot total outshooting the Dolphins 21-10.  Five of those shot attempts belonged to Espinosa, and five other Dolphins attempted a single shot.  Each Dolphins goalkeeper allowed a pair of goals, and Nicholas Shields made four saves in relief of Thompson who saved two shots.  Iver Sjavag allowed all three goals surrendered by the Greyhounds and saved three shots in 90 minutes, and Sundgot led the way offensively with seven shots, five of which were on goal and two of which found the back of the net.

The Dolphins will play their second straight road game on Wednesday when they face Goldey-Beacom College on the road at 4:00 PM.
