Women’s Soccer Draws with Bentley in Season Opener

Garden City, N.Y. – The Molloy women's soccer team opened the 2023 campaign with a 1-1 draw against the Bentley Falcons, Thursday afternoon at Motamed Field at Adelphi University.
 
How it Happened
  • Bentley generated the first chance of the contest in the sixth minute with a shot on target, but freshman goalkeeper Elyse Muñoz denied the opportunity.
  • Molloy tallied its first shot of the game in the 10th minute when sophomore Mikaela Barriga sent a shot wide.
  • The teams played possession for the next 20 minutes of action, as neither team was able to generate offense in their respective thirds of the field.
  • In the 31st minute, graduate student Caitlin Kennedy created a chance, but put the shot just wide right of target.
  • The Lions broke through 42nd minute, sophomore Olivia Ingenito found the back of the net with a chance inside the box to pull ahead, 1-0.
  • The Falcons looked to answer 33 seconds later, but Muñoz made a save to keep Molloy in front, 1-0, heading into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Bentley wasted no time, knotting the contest at one a piece 1:30 into the second half following a goal from Ryenne Feeney.
  • The cardinal and white looked to regain its lead minutes later when freshman Isabella Muro put a shot on net but was denied by Bentley goalkeeper Claire Ewen.
  • The 56th minute saw Bentley get its shot at taking the lead, but senior Shannon Kilian would not allow the shot to get past her to keep the game tied at one.
  • Nine minutes later, Muro, had a second go at giving the Lions the lead, but again the Falcons goalie would deny the chance.
  • Bentley would put together two more opportunities in the 82nd minute, but Kilian stood strong and made two key saves and end the game in a 1-1 draw.
 
Top Performances
  • Ingenito netted her first career goal.
  • Senior Sarah Tappeto picked up an assist.
  • Kennedy paced the team in shots (5) and Muro led the team with three shots on goal.
  • Muñoz made two saves in her collegiate debut and Kilian totaled three stops.
 
Up Next
The Lions will return to Garden City Saturday (Sept. 2) to face local rival Adelphi. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
