Flushing, N.Y. - The women's tennis team competed in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Division II East Regional Tournament this weekend at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, hosted by Queens College.

In the first round of singles play, senoir Camilla Caballero Abreu forced a tiebreaker against Gloria Barcaro of Wilmington University. The senior first fell, 6-2, but rallied to a 7-6 victory in the second set before claiming a definitive 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker to advance to the second round. 

Caballero Abreu fell in the round of 64 to Laura Marie of the University of the District of Columbia, 6-4, 6-2. 

Junior Elena Baughman Saunders just narrowly missed a chance to advance to the second round, also forcing a tiebreaker in her match against Claudia Rasilla Romero of Chestnut Hill College. Falling behind 6-3, the junior won 7-6 to force the tiebreaker that ended 10-3 in favor of the Griffin. 

The doubles tandem of senior Noor Goyvaerts and freshman Alice Fartushynska drew a bye in the first round. The pairing fell to Amanda Kadiri and Sofiya Tandelolva of Saint Thomas Aquinas College, 8-2. 

The Lions return to traditional competition on Thursday (Sept. 21) as they host the Eagles of Post University at 3:00 p.m. from Sportime Hempstead Lake in West Hempstead, N.Y.
