Spartans Take Three of Four From Mavericks To Win Season Series

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team received an outstanding pitching performance from starter Orin Winslow and timely hitting from their red-hot lineup to take three of four contests from the Mercy College Mavericks, winning Monday afternoon's affair in Westchester, 5-1.

STAC improves to 12-13 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, while Mercy drops to 5-22 and 1-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC opened the scoring in the third inning with a pair of runs. First Nick O'Connor's RBI single to left-centerfield, scored Andrew Jemison to make it 1-0.
  • Then a Gregory DiGiaro sacrifice fly to centerfield, allowed Andrew Guerra to score to increase the maroon and gold to 2-0.
  • In the fifth, an Andrew Guerra single to right field plated Andrew Jemison and extended the Spartans advantage to 3-0.
  • Nolan Giblin got Mercy on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning via an RBI groundout to first base, which brought Sean McAdams to the plate to make it 3-1.
  • A Gregory DiGiaro single to left field in the eighth inning, scored Sean Lynch to give STAC back its three-run lead at 4-1.
  • C.J. Cumbo added the final run of the contest for the Spartans in the ninth, courtesy of an RBI single down the left field line, which scored Andrew Jemison for a third time on the day and made it a 5-1 game.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Gregory DiGiaro went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI.
  • Andrew Jemison (1-for-3) scored three times and also drew three walks.
  • C.J. Cumbo, Andrew Guerra, Nick O'Connor and Billy Minett recorded a hit apiece, with Minett earning a two-base knock.
  • Orin Winslow was stellar for the Spartans on the mound, giving up only three hits and a run in eight innings of work to pick up his first win (1-1) of the season. Winslow also walked just two Mavericks batters, while striking out seven.
  • Mateo Reyes came on in relief in the ninth and pitched a perfect inning, while fanning one Mercy hitter.

  • The Spartans posted 5 runs on 6 hits, with no errors, while Mercy earned 1 runs on 3 hits, with 1 error.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 8 Mavericks batters, while issuing 2 walks on the day.
