Wildcats Split Friday At Tony Banner Memorial Invitational

CLARION, PA – The Daemen University women's volleyball team split the day at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Friday, first falling 3-2 to Shippensburg in an exciting five-set decision, then sweeping Fayetteville State 3-0 in the second match of the day.
 
DAEMEN VS. SHIPPENSBURG
The Wildcats dropped their second match of the tournament on Friday afternoon, falling 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-12, 13-15) to Shippensburg in their first of two matches of the day. Freshman Charlotte Koerber (Munich, Germany) and senior Giselle Giraud (Orlando, Fla.) were the heavy hitters for the Wildcats in the five-set match, combining for 30 of Daemen's 54 total kills in the game.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • For the second straight match, Koerber led the Wildcats offensively with a match-high 16 kills (3.2 kills/set). The freshman outside hitter recorded her first collegiate double-double (kills-digs), adding 11 digs along with an ace and an assist to her stat line.
  • Giraud put together a career outing against the Raiders on Friday, tying her career-high kills with 14 on the day with just three errors while hitting at a .393 clip. The outside hitter finished with five assisted blocks and three digs.
  • Senior libero Jasmine Brundage (East Aurora, N.Y.) scooped up a team-high 18 digs (3.6 digs/set) and led the team with 23 receptions on the day.
  • Sophomore outside hitter Nahirka Malpica (Caguas, P.R.) was one kill away from her first double-double, tallying a career-high 15 digs (3 digs/set) and nine kills while adding two assisted blocks.
  • Making her first start of the 2023 season, senior setter Dunja Masic (McHenry, Ill.) tallied 44 assists (8.8 assists/set) and a team-high four service aces along with two assisted block and five digs.
  • Senior middle Vanessa Kuliga (Glenview, Ill.) totaled six kills, a team-high four aces, and three assisted blocks on the day. 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Giraud started the match off strong, knocking down three kills in Daemen's first five points of the match. After trading points to start the set, the Raiders took advantage of Daemen's errors to take the first set 25-21.
  • The second set was a game of runs for each team. Koerber led the Wildcats with four second-set kills, and with the Daemen duo of Kuliga and Malpica each adding three kills apiece, the Wildcats won the second 25-20 to tie the match up.
  • The Raiders seemed to control most of the third set, leading by as much as 21-13 before Daemen went on a 7-3 run to make it 24-20, but a Daemen service error on Shippensburg set point gave the Raiders the 25-20 third set victory.
  • Daemen opened up the fourth on fire, taking a 8-1 lead to start the set. The Wildcats kept the foot on the gas throughout the set, taking the fourth 25-12 to send the match to a fifth set.
  • The Raiders and Wildcats took the fifth set all the way down to the wire, with Daemen taking back-to-back points on Shippensburg's set point to make it a two-point game. The Raiders would get the set and match win eventually, taking the fifth 15-13.
  • Daemen out-killed (54-51), out-aced (10-3), and out-blocked (9-5) the Raiders, and finished the match hitting .168.

 
DAEMEN VS. FAYETTEVILLE STATE
Daemen bounced back from back-to-back losses to open up the season with this afternoon's big 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-16) win over Fayetteville State in their second match of the day. Senior outside hitter Giselle Giraud was the only Wildcat to knock down double-digit kills in the match, finishing with 12 kills (4 kills/set) and zero errors on 18 attacks.
 
IMPACT PLAYERS
  • Capping off a successful Friday, Giraud hit at a .667 clip. She added four block assists and three digs for a match-high 14 points in the match.
  • Charlotte Koerber added another exciting performance on the court with nine kills (3 kills/set) for a .222 hitting percentage, 10 digs (3.33 kills/set), one ace and one solo block.
  • Making her 2023 debut, Kate Ryan (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with eight kills (2.66 kills/set) with a .429 hitting percentage. The junior right side added two block assists to her stat line.
  • Dunja Masic led all players with an impressive six aces on the day, and added 17 assists, one block assist and four digs.
  • Olivia Alessi totaled 19 assists (6.33 assists/set), one ace and two digs.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Wildcats put together a 25-13 first-set victory in which Koerber tallied three of Daemen's 11 kills. The Cats hit at a .259 clip in the first, and held Fayetteville State to a -.036 hitting percentage.
  • Daemen put the pedal to the metal in the second set, cruising to a 25-9 win. Ryan totaled five second-set kills, and with Giraud adding four kills, the Wildcats hit at a .577 clip in the set.
  • Fayetteville State got off to a solid start in the third set, but after tying the game up, the Wildcats went on a 9-5 run to close out the set, 25-16 to win the match.
  • Daemen finished the match with 42 kills and a .291 hitting percentage.
 
GAME NOTES
  • The Wildcats and Raiders met for just the second time in program history.
  • This marked the first time Daemen and Fayetteville State squared off on the court.
  • Daemen was picked first in the East Coast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll for the second straight season. The Wildcats are victors of two consecutive ECC regular season and ECC Tournaments.
  • The Wildcats open the 2023 season with three straight tournaments, starting with this weekend's Tony Banner Memorial Tournament. Daemen returns to Lumsden Gymnasium next weekend (Sept. 8-9) to host the Wildcat Den Classic, then heads to Long Island for the Adelphi Volleyball Tournament (Sept. 15-16).
