Men's Basketball Cruises to 100-74 Victory Over UDC

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team had all five of its starters score in double-figures, as the maroon and gold remained perfect in conference play with a 100-74 triumph over the University of the District of Columbia on Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 18-3 overall and 9-0 in the ECC, while UDC slips to 6-12 and 4-5.

Antonio Vendola led the way for the Spartans, recording 18 points, while teammates James Patterson (14 points), Jamal Barnes (14 points), DeVante Jamison (12 points) and Jordan Green (11 points) also recorded double-digit point totals.

STAC shot 50.0 percent from the field (35-70) and a blistering 56.7 percent from three (17-30), while UDC shot 38.0 percent (27-71) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten Spartans recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the maroon and gold with 12 assists on the evening.
  • Antonio Vendola made 6 of his 10 field goal attempts, with all six coming from behind the arc, while Jamal Barnes went 5-for-12 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded UDC 50-34, with Jordan Green and Kyle Pulliam grabbing a game-high eight boards apiece.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up seven steals, with the Firebirds turning the ball over on 14 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in two team statistical categories over District of Columbia: Second Chance Points (19-11) and Bench Points (31-29).
  • The game featured one tie and no lead changes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC raced out to an early 10-2 lead on the strength of buckets by DeVante Jamison, James Patterson, and Jamal Barnes, and forced the visiting Firebirds to call an early 30-second timeout.
  • Holding an 11-point advantage (15-4) with 16:21 to play in the first half, UDC battled back to within one (15-14) with a 10-0 run of their own.
  • The teams traded baskets for a large portion of the stanza, before a 13-3 streak opened a 17-point lead for the Spartans, 46-29 with two minutes to play before halftime.
  • UDC scored four of the last seven points in the half to trail by 16 (49-33) at the break.
  • James Patterson paced the Spartans offense with 12 first-half points, while Michael Aiken led all scorers with 15 points for the Firebirds.
  • Jordan Green, Jamal Barnes and Antonio Vendola expanded the STAC lead to 20 at 58-38 with 15:30 left to play in the game.
  • While the visiting Firebirds continued to score regularly, the unrelenting offense of the Spartans continued to wear out the nets, with buckets coming from every single player dressed in maroon and gold that stepped onto the floor. 
  • A pair of DeVante Jamison free throws with 5:07 to play gave STAC its biggest lead of the night (39 points), 93-54.
  • UDC had one more big run in them, scoring 15 of 19 points over the next 3:16 trail 97-69.
  • A Ethan Millirons trey in the final two minutes of action got the Spartans to the century mark for the fourth time this season.
  • The visitors closed the scoring with a three-point jumper and a layup over the final 1:21, but the deficit would be too much to overcome, as STAC clinched its third straight victory.
