Spartans Split Saturday Baseball Twin Bill at Jefferson

Philadelphia, Pa. - A late winter season storm forced the St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team to head back out on the road, shifting a four-game series entirely to the City of Brotherly Love and Jefferson University's Alumni Field.

On Saturday, the Spartans and Rams split a twin bill, with Jefferson taking the first game, 3-2, before STAC earned a 4-1 victory in the backend of the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE

  • Jefferson plated three first inning runs. First Chris McLean doubled down the third base line with two on and nobody out, scoring Alex Gonzalez to make it 1-0.
  • Joe Cenetti laced a one-out single up the middle, with runners at first and third, bringing Jay Kalieta and McLean around to score, giving the Rams a 3-0 advantage.
  • In the second inning, Kyle Lagrutta scored the Spartans only runs of the game, when he smacked a two-run homer to left field to cut the deficit to 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO

  • STAC got out to an early lead on a Kyle Lagrutta one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Andrew Jemison to make it 1-0.
  • Diego Santiago tied things up at 1-1 for Jefferson in the bottom of the frame with a two-out single to second base, bringing Jay Kalieta around to score.
  • A Christopher Conti solo shot in the second inning put the Spartans back ahead at 2-1.
  • In the fifth inning, a passed ball with the bases loaded allowed Andrew Jemison to come home, making it a 3-1 game for the maroon and gold.
  • Sean Lynch extended the Spartans' lead to 4-1 with a one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Nick O'Connor.

STAC PERFORMANCES

  • Nick O'Connor went 3-for-7 with 2 runs scored on the day.
  • Christopher Conti had a hit (solo home run) in three at-bats, while recording an RBI and a run scored.
  • Kyle Lagrutta hit a two-run homer in six plate appearances for the Spartans. He also posted 3 RBI and a run scored. 
  • STAC also saw hits from Justin Klayman (2), Andrew Jemison (1) and Andrew Guerra (1), Sean Lynch (1) and Kyle DeCresce (1)
  • Aaron Dona got ball in the opener for St. Thomas Aquinas and pitched six innings, giving up four hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out ten. Dona took the complete game loss and moved to 2-1 on the year.
  • John Archer started game two and pitched six solid innings, giving up just three hits and a run, while walking three and K'ing two. Archer picked up his first win of the season.
  • Bryan Krolikowski came on in relief in the seventh inning and only walked two, while fanning one to earn his second save of the campaign.

FACTS & FIGURES

  • The Spartans posted 6 runs on 11 hits, with no errors, while Jefferson earned 4 runs on 7 hits, with 3 errors in two games.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 13 Rams batters, while issuing 7 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 12 runners on base. Jefferson left 9 in both contests.
