Wildcats Complete Weekend Sweep With 5-4 Win Over William Smith College

GENEVA, N.Y. - The Daemen University women's tennis team opened capped off a perfect weekend following a hard fought 5-4 victory over William Smith College this afternoon in a match played at the HWS Tennis Center. The matched was played using NCAA Division III rules.

Daemen, which rolled to an 8-1 win over St. John Fisher University yesterday, improved to 2-0 on the year. It is the first 2-0 start for the Wildcats since the 2020-21 season. It marked the first dual match of the year for William Smith.

It marked the second-straight year the teams battled to a 5-4 decision. Last year the Herons edged the Wildcats in the first-ever meeting between the schools in women's tennis.

Daemen held a 2-1 lead after winning two of the three doubles matches. Daemen's No. 1 singles team of senior Frida Rubio (San Diego, Calif.) and junior Kitsa Scime (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted an 8-4 win over junior Natalie Haythorn and sophomore Haley Levine. Daemen's No. 3 doubles team of freshman Maya Chon (Wichita, Kan.) and junior Emily Jablonski (Alden, N.Y.) remained undefeated on the season following an 8-3 win over freshmen Mae Kellersman and Grace Magma. WSC took No. 2 doubles after senior Jamie Fine and freshman Maddy Buck outlasted junior Yinett Del Leon (Cape Coral, Fla.) and sophomore Carly Armitage (Rochester, N.Y.), 8-5.

Rubio prevailed over Levine at No. 1 singles (6-4, 6-3), while Scime defeated Haythorn at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-0), leaving Daemen just one win from victory.

The Herons tied the match at 4-4 after posting wins at third, fifth and sixth singles. Kellersman bested Del Leon (7-5, 6-2) at No. 3, Fine defeated junior Arianna Lysiak (Depew, N.Y.) at No. 5 and Buck rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-1 win over Jablonski at No. 6.

Armitage provided the winning point for Daemen following a 6-3, 7-5 win over Magma at No. 4 singles. Armitage is now 2-0 in singles play on the year.

MATCH NOTES: Rubio and Scime both recorded their 26th career singles win today and both are now one win away from moving into the top five in career wins at Daemen. Scime is now 21-8 in her last 29 singles matches dating back to the end of her freshman season.

Daemen hits the road again next weekend (Sept. 15-18) to take part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region Championships in Flushing, N.Y.
