Dominican Overpowers STAC, 20-3

Hillburn, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Lacrosse team received goals from McKenzie Schlechtweg, Hailey Galison and Katelyn Cerrato, but the Spartans wound up suffering a 20-3 setback to crosstown rivals, Dominican University on Tuesday afternoon at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.

Dominican held the upper hand in shots (34-14), ground balls (17-14) and draw controls (19-7) and went 11-for-11 on clears. STAC was 7-for-14 on clear attempts. On free-position shots, the Chargers were 2-for-4, while the Spartans were 0-for-2.

STAC falls to 0-5 overall with the loss and visits Caldwell University on Friday, March 10, at 4 p.m. Dominican improves to 5-1 overall with the win.

Junior Hailey Gailson scored the first goal for the Spartans, relying on a pass from junior McKenzie Schlechtweg to find the back of the cage with 11 minutes to play in the third Quarter. Sophomore Katelyn Cerrato opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal, while Schlechtweg tallied a power play goal late in the contest, with the helper credited to freshman teammate Arianna Tribble

For Dominican, Caitlin Costello led the way with 11 points on four goals and seven assists, while Madelyn Grella had 10 points on four goals and six assists. Grace DeStasio (three goals, one assist), Jordana Tomasetti (three goals), Sydney Strohmayer (two goals), Anna Kaminskey (one goal), Erica Ortiz (one goal), Ellie Brouwer (one goal) and Lea Henke (one goal) also contributed to the Chargers' offense.

Senior goalie Colleen Stevens (L, 0-5) made 11 stops on the afternoon, while Dominican's four goalies combined to turn away seven shots.
