Firebirds Fight Fall Short Against Spartans

SPARKHILL, N.Y.- the University of the District of Columbia's women's tennis team was handed their first loss of the season in a tough conference match up against reigning ECC Champions, St Thomas Aquinas College. The Firebirds fell to 2-1 in conference play while the Spartans improved to 2-1.

The Spartans won the doubles points after winning at No. 1 and 2. The duo of Claudia Bahamon and Celia Bastin won the Firebirds only doubles match up of the day defeating their opponents 6-3 at No.3.

Mariona Franco would tie the score 1-1 at No.3 after defeating her opponent in two straight sets.

STAC went on to win the next two matches with wins at No.4 and 1. Laura Marie battled reigning ECC Player of the Year and ITA East Regional Champion, Ebba Rosberg to a three set match up. Marie took the first set 6-3, but Rosberg forced a tiebreaker winning the second set 6-3. Rosberg would emerge victorious taking the tiebreaker 6-3.

Freshman, Polina Zelentsova put up a three set battle at the No.2 position as well. After taking the first set 7-5, she fell to her opponent , 3-6 in the second. But she would rally back in the third set, giving the Firebirds their second point of the day with a 6-2 tiebreaker win.

The winning point for the Spartans came at No.5.

Next up, UDC (4-1, 2-1 ECC) will head to Millersville for a non conference match up on Wednesday.
