Firebirds Struggle From the Field; Concede to Dolphins 63-74

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.- The University of the District of Columbia's men's basketball team fell to the College of Staten Island in a Wednesday evening conference match up at the Sports & Recreation Center. The Firebirds fall to 1-2 in league play, while the Dolphins improve to 1-2.

While nine Firebirds contributed to scoring, it wasn't enough as they struggled from the field shooting at 38.2% while their opponents shot at 45.2%. Micah Campbell and Tevin Curtis led UDC with 13 points apiece and Hartnel Haye and Torrence Horton each added 10. Campbell also added a team high nine rebounds and three blocks.

Both teams grabbed a total 33 rebounds, and the Firebird bench outshot the Dolphins bench 29-9. UDC's achilles heal turned out to be turnovers as CSI converted 19 points as a result, compared to their nine. The home team also had the upperhand on points in the paint (42-36).

UDC dug themselves in a hole early on which proved lethal in the long run. A series of poor shot selections and back to back turnovers led to a low FG% and their opponents capitalizing to lead by as much as 22 points in the second half.

Despite the odds, the Firebirds refused to give up, and managed to outscore CSI 41-38 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the 14 point deficit created in the first.

Next Up, UDC (3-5, 1-2 ECC) will travel to Delaware, for a non conference match up against Wilmington next Wednesday. The game is slated to go off at 7:00 PM.
