Nine ECC Student-Athletes Named to Capital One Academic All-District Teams

Central Islip, N.Y. - Nine East Coast Conference student-athletes were recently recognized for their work both in the classroom and on the field by being named to the Capital One Academic All-District Teams in their respective sports.

Four of the nine student-athletes come from Bridgeport. Julia Hansson (3.84 gpa), Christoffer Olesen (3.80 gpa), Biljana Savic (International Business, 3.91 gpa), and Sabrina Simas (Psychology, 3.90 gpa) were the Purple Knights selected. Hansson posted an 11-6-2 record as a goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team with seven of her wins coming via shutout. Olesen was the second leading scorer for the men’s soccer team, scoring four goals and dishing off three assists for 11 points on the year. Savic and Simas have helped the Bridgeport volleyball team to the top spot in the ECC. Savic, an outside hitter, leads the Purple Knights with 317 kills, while Simas is second on the team with 54 total blocks to go along with 135 kills.

LIU Post was next with three selections. Marco Jorgensen (Political Science and Economics, 3.98 gpa) and Eivind Austboe (Business Management, 3.93 gpa) have been stand outs on the ECC Champion and nationally top-ranked Pioneers men’s soccer team. Jorgesen won his second straight ECC Goalkeeper of the Year honor after leading the ECC in almost every statistical category including goals against (17), goals against average (0.99), and save percentage (.795). Austboe tallied 19 points on eight goals and three assists in only seven games of action before having his season cut short due to an injury.

Prudence Rydstrom (Speech Language and Pathology, 3.56 gpa) of the LIU Post women’s soccer team was also selected. Rydstrom helped lead the Pioneers back to the NCAA Tournament with 12 points on five goals and two assists on the year.

NYIT’s Vinny Caccavale (Communication Arts, 3.32 gpa) and Roberts Wesleyan’s Jackie Corbett (Education, 4.00 gpa) round out the selections. Caccavale was an All-Conference honoree after finishing second on the team in scoring with 18 points on six goals and six assists. Corbett started all 18 games and scored one goal for the Redhawks in their first year in the ECC.

All honorees now move on to the Capital One Academic All-America ballot, which will be released later this month.
