Bridgeport, Conn. - Nearly 100 administrators, coaches, student-athletes and guests from East Coast Conference member institutions traveled to the John J. Cox Student Center on the campus of the University of Bridgeport on June 4 for the East Coast Conference Awards Dinner. Highlighting this year's event was the ECC Hall of Fame induction of three former student-athletes, a coach, and an administrator.
The event also highlighted team and student-athlete accomplishments including recognizing the Players, Coaches and Scholar-Athletes of the Year from all 18 ECC sponsored sports. In addition, the conference honored student-athletes, teams, and member institutions with special awards while also handing out the 2017-18 Commissioner’s Cup.
Mike Aviles (Concordia baseball student-athlete), Tammy Greene (Jefferson women's basketball student-athlete), Maja Potpara Krljic (Dowling volleyball student-athlete), Neil Judge (Mercy Athletic Director), and Pete Zinno (NYIT Head Coach - Track & Field) were inducted into the ECC Hall of Fame. The Daemen College Athletic Department was awarded the Community Engagement Award of Excellence. The Wildcats were awarded for their Center for Allied and Unified Sport & Exercise (CAUSE) program. (read more)
Molloy received the ECC Cares Award for leading the conference in monies raised for collective causes. The Lions raised just over $8,700, good for an average of $28.25 per student-athlete. (read more)
Roberts Wesleyan College was presented with the ECC Community Cup after averaging over 16 hours of community service and community engagement per student-athlete, the highest among the 10 institutions. (read more)
LIU Post won the Commissioner’s Cup for the sixth straight year. The Pioneers made the ECC Championship tournaments in all 17 ECC sports they sponsor, won three conference tournament championships, and six regular season championships to claim the award. (read more)
St. Thomas Aquinas was awarded the ECC Academic Success Rate Award. The Spartans earned the honor after posting an 88 percent graduation success rate in the NCAA Academic Tracking System.
Senior Andreu Ferragut-Lluch of the St. Thomas Aquinas men's tennis team was named the 2018 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Ferragut-Lluch boasted a grade point average (GPA) of 3.92 as a Biology major. He was also an ECC All-Conference First Team selection with a record of 14-4 in singles. (read more)
Junior Rachel Londot of the LIU Post volleyball team was tabbed the 2018 Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Londot has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Forensic Science major with a minor in Chmeistry. She also was the ECC Player of the Year while helping the Pioneers to an ECC Regular Season Championship. (read more)
Four student-athletes received the John Smillie, Jr. Award for overcoming personal and physical challenges to continue to play the sport that they love. Tyrone Hall of the Queens men's basketball team, Thomas Liantonio of the LIU Post men's lacrosse team, Missy Sadler of the St. Thomas Aquinas women's basketball and softball teams, and Mike Williams of the LIU Post football team were recognized for their courage, dedication, and inspiring stories. The most prestigious award of the evening, dubbed the Excellence in Community and Character Award (E.C.C. Award), was presented to three student-athletes this year. The E.C.C. Award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through positive actions and behaviors that are consistent with the NCAA Division II attributes of learning, service, passion, sportsmanship, balance and resourcefulness. This year’s recipients were Jenna Erickson (women's basketball, St. Thomas Aquinas), Liam Haycock (men's soccer, Dist. Columbia), and Katie McKrell (volleyball, Daemen). (read more)
