May 23, 2007

Pioneers Top Panthers By One Point To Take Title

May 23, 2007 – On the strength of one outright championship and one co-championship plus earning no fewer than seven points in any of its 12 sports, C.W. Post has captured the 2006-2007 East Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup, emblematic of the league's top program across all sports. C.W. Post scored 109.5 points to nip Adelphi (108.5 points) by a single point. This is the second straight season the Pioneers have won the ECC Commissioner's Cup. Last season, C.W. Post edged Adelphi by an 81 to 80.5 score. This year, a new scoring system was used in the ECC Commissioner's Cup race as both regular season and conference tournament performances were taken into account to figure a team's total. The University of New Haven (89.75 points) finished third in the standings.

The Pioneers won the women's lacrosse title during an undefeated, National Championship season and earned a share of the men's cross country crown, plus placed in the top three in seven other sports. Adelphi, which has won four of the past six Commissioner's Cup crowns, earned top points in women's cross country and baseball plus shared the top spot in men's cross country and finished in the top three in five other sports. New Haven earned the maximum points in women's basketball and finished in the top three in five other sports.

Adelphi and C.W. Post each sponsor 12 of the 13 ECC championship sports on the Division II level, while New Haven sponsors 11.

Dowling College finished fourth in the race at 87 points, followed by the NYIT at 67.25 and the University of Bridgeport at 62.25.
