Members of the Adelphi University Champs/Lifeskills program traveled to Old Mill Elementary School yesterday to read to children as part of the school's Parents as Reading Parnters (PARP).
This is the third straight year that the Panthers have partnered with the program designed to celebrate reading. Amy Williams (volleyball), sophomore Jennifer McKenna (Volleyball), Angel Ortega (Cross-Country/Track) and freshman Courtney Acker (W. Lacrosse) each volunteered their time to read to students in grade 3-6 as part of the guest reader series. The student-athletes were also on hand to answer questions by the children.
The goal of PARP is to reinforce the concept that education and learning should be significant throughout the students' lives. With this year's theme, Old Mill Road wanted to demonstrate that college and professional athletes as well as media representatives are actively sending this same important message about education, and use student-athletes as role models for the students.
