DOBBS FERRY, NY - The Mercy College softball team will hold a Celebrity Breakfast Fundraiser with former New York Yankee John Flaherty on Friday, March 13, from 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. in the Rotunda at Mercy Hall.  Student-athletes from the softball team will serve as the wait staff for this benefit event. John Flaherty was a catcher for the New York Yankees along with the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, and Tampa Bay Devil Rays during his 14 year major league career. Following his retirement he joined the YES Network broadcast team as a field reporter, studio analyst and game analyst for Yankees telecasts.  A New York City native, Flaherty grew up in Rockland County and is a graduate of George Washington University. The Mercy College softball team returns eight letterwinners from last year's squad that made a nine win improvement over the previous season.  First year head coach Jennifer Hastings will have five starters from that group in this year's lineup, along with a talented group of newcomers. The Mavericks will begin the 2009 campaign with a trip to Cocoa Beach, Fla. From March 5-11, where they will take on St. Anselm College, Dakota-Wesleyan University, Lees-McRae College, Carlow University, Bloomfield College and Black Hills State University.
